With yoga, I think you should take classes for a while in person, so you know that you are not doing something that will injure you or cause physical problems later. A teacher can correct, but a video can not! Meditation is much safer to do and learn on their own, but if it is a meditation group of some kind in your college, you can take that into account. It is good to contact other people who meditate – and many will be willing to help you and do not require payment. You might also see if any of the meditation teachers in your area will accept some form of trade, because you are a graduate student. It may well be that he would be happy to do something like that.
